Do you need someone to watch your child when they get out of school? Have your friends and relatives all turned down your requests, even with offers of pay? In order to make ends meet, more and more people have to get jobs to take care of the bills. When you have children, this can be especially difficult because you can't simply leave a younger child home alone. To find the right people to look after your child, here are some things that you should do first.

Check with school

Some schools run an after school childcare program already for free or for a very low cost. If the school doesn't do this, they may be able to recommend a program that you hadn't heard of before. Other parents at your child's school can also be a good resource when it comes to locating a program that will work for you and your family. When someone recommends a program to you, make sure you ask that person why they recommend it and what advantages it has in comparison to similar programs. Not every program is going to be right for every child so you might have to check out multiple recommendations before finding the best one for your needs.

Tour the facility

Find out what the children do and where they spend most of their time during the after school childcare program. Are these facilities well-equipped? A sports-based program should have plenty of sports equipment. An arts-and-crafts program should have sufficient crafting supplies. If possible, tour the facility when children are there to see how happy the kids seem to be. There will almost always be at least one sad, angry, or otherwise upset child in any program but most of the kids should look like they are enjoying themselves and that they aren't bored.

Ask about pickup times

In some cases, an after school childcare program may only last an hour or two. For a lot of people, this may be all that is needed to get off of work and to come get their child. However, you should also find out what will happen if you are late picking up your child. If you get into a minor fender-bender in the future and will be a bit late, you want to make sure that your child will be looked after until you are able to get to them. Some programs have fees for tardy pickups so make sure you're aware of what these fees might be and have some money set aside to pay them just in case.
